dad's scarf

i started working on this scarf with this amazing burgundy yarn that i

love, but can't find any more any where. i didn't have enough burgundy to finish, so i finished it with the same yarn in blue that i had left from another project. i couldn't stop knitting with it so it's pretty long, but it's amazingly comfortable.

i gave it to dad.

mom's cowl

i started mom's cowl about 2 years ago but messed it up. so i took it ALL out and started over. it's beautiful and made with alpaca yarn.

i used a seed stitch or moss stitch. which ends up looking like this:

it's very easy to make, and has a nice bumpy texture.

mom likes moss and green, so this was a custom piece.

i know how to do it now!

this cowl is the first project i

started and finished in oakland. i've found a couple cute yarn shops in the area.

it has a multiple of 10 stitches plus one. so knit 10, purl 1 makes it have a nice, simple texture like this:

i started these leg warmers when i was in chicago, but didn't finish them until after i moved.

they are knit on straight needles because i didn't have circular needles small enough. and are just basic ribbed: knit 2, purl 2, and then sewn together.

i'm going to post this to see if the picture works.

Basket Weave Scarf

My boy, Timmy, has been wanting me to make him a scarf for awhile. He even joined me on a yarn shopping trip to pick out some grey yarn. The boy likes grey, a lot. He wanted something simple so I was just going to do garter stitch for the whole thing. Unfortunately, about 10 inches in I got really bored and never finished it. That was back in October or November. Then I got all tangled up in yarn with my Christmas gifts and poor Timmy never got a scarf.

Now that my cable hat is done and I have two hours of commute time each day, I told Timmy I would try again to make him a scarf, he just had to pick a more interesting pattern. He, of course, chose the exact same yarn but he did pick an excellent pattern. It is really easy yet it is complicated enough to keep me interested. I haven't gotten very far yet:

Cable Hat

As I mentioned a few posts ago, I just learned to cable knit. I love the look and feel of cables and they are so much fun to make. It really keeps the work interesting. So I decided to make myself a hat to match my cream colored scarf. I started this hat about two months ago but I screwed up the pattern pretty early on and had to start all over. When I am faced with the task of starting a project all over again it usually takes me awhile to get up the motivation to actually do it. I started knitting this hat the second time in early March and it only took me about two weeks to complete.

Elizabeth's First Sweater

She might not be thrilled that I am posting this for her, but I think the world needs to see the amazing baby sweater Elizabeth is making. She is still in progress in this image which was taken just after she managed to get the sleeves somewhat connected to the body. It is a beautiful soft yarn and I believe she has some lovely wooden buttons to affix. Hopefully, she will post more details and better pictures once it is completed.

Cabled Arm Warmers

I made my first of two cabled arm warmers using this pattern. I really love it and I wish they were done so I could wear them already. The purple yarn is so gorgeous and soft! They were supposed to be for my aunt but they might end up staying here with me. The pattern was pretty easy and I found that I LOVE cabling, it keeps the work interesting. This one only took a few hours.

Learning to Cable

I just started learning how to cable knit. This is my practice piece. My mother gave me a giant bag of crappy, old yarn. This was some of it. I think it looks kinda like a Mexican flag. Happy accident.

I am lucky to have Elizabeth to teach me but Knitting Help has also been an excellent resource, in fact I am pretty sure that is how she learned.

My next project is these fabulous cabled arm warmers. I am making them in a dark purple shade. I think I'll keep them for myself but they might also make a great gift for my aunt. I owe her a Christmas gift still.

My only complaint about the pattern is that it calls for size 8 needles and the arm warmers look really loose and holey. I really prefer a nice tight knit. If I make these again I will probably use a smaller needle, I don't mind if they are a little tight on my arm in the end.

Welcome to our knitting community blog! Elizabeth, Mera and I started knitting together six months ago every Saturday night. Both Elizabeth and Mera are more expert knitters than I, they taught me a lot of what I know in the past six months. We started this blog together after Mera left us Chicago gals for the sunny state of California. But she can tell you more about that later.

Tonight I am working on this lovely cowl for myself. I spent all of November and December knitting gifts for my friends and family. As a little post-holiday gift to myself I purchased this fancy yarn from Loops and Links in my hometown De Pere, Wisconsin. This yarn is Navajo Silver from the Baby Boom collection of Fiesta Yarns.

I am not following a pattern, just knitting in the round 15 rows and then purling one, etc. It looks pretty neat so far.
